I have a lead on a free Jaguar 5.3L V12, what car would you swap it into?
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:10 |

I suppose it’s a tad big for your Datsun roadster...
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:11 |

toyota tercel

Into a nearly free Jaguar that is missing an engine?
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:12 |

Where the back seats were.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:12 |

Hmmm...that makes me wonder if it would fit in a 280Z. They did come with straight sixes so the engine bay should be long enough.

SHIFTER KART!!!!!!!!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:13 |

Miata. I mean, V12 Miata. Do eeeeeettttt.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:13 |
|
A Jaguar is never truly free, you’ll always pay for it somehow, haha
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:14 |
|
The V12 is also pretty narrow, because it’s 60 degrees, it might fit!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:15 |

A C3 Corvette. YOU KNOW I’M RIGHT
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:15 |

Already been done.

Speed boat?
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:15 |

Mgb. Or similar. Or, find yourself a jag dash Vin tag and build a tube frame Jagkart like Roadkill’s Vettekart.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:15 |
|
It’s been done.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:16 |

Oof, you’re a brave son of a gun.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:17 |

I thought the price always came with the engine problems.

Triumph TR6.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:18 |

It’s the electrics that let down a Jag, the engine itself is very reliable, and that sound... Woof.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:19 |
|
Uh oh
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:20 |
|
Making it a TR12 of course
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:21 |

I like this idea, I wish I lived near a nice lake or something. It would be like the dirtbag version of this Lamborghini powered speed boat.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:21 |
|
A definite improvement over the wheezy 6 that it comes with!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:22 |
|
This
is for sale in Pennsylvania for $500 and it still has some kind of (non-running) engine. The title is missing but there might be some solution for that. But there have to be some suitable for your engine lurking somewhere.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:22 |
|
Well that’s a good thing them. Huzzah for modern, swappable electronics!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:23 |
|
I already have a Datsun Roadster, if I do anything to that car’s engine it’ll be replacing the crankshaft with one from a Nissan forklift, which strokes it to 2L. I could see a JagKart with a tunnel ram setup!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:24 |
|
And headers pointed straight through the roof
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:24 |
|
Put it in a Vette.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:24 |
|
It doesn’t have to be the CletusVette, but now that you know your way around a C3, and given that that engine bolts up to the right transmissions (at least in auto) and weighs between a BBC and SBC, one set of fabbed engine mounts and a fabbed exhaust and you’re pretty much there.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:27 |
|
I actually don’t mind the later Vettes. Yes the Jag v12 bolts right up to a TH400, but I must have manual! As if the Corvette needed to be more susceptible to overheating and fire, haha.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:28 |
|
And doesn’t the world need more of that???
Fine. Second option - MR2 or Fiero. MR car + V12 = Supercar, right?
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:28 |
|
The cletus-vette. Or a Miata.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:29 |
|
Oooh. Even better. A SNOWMOBILE!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:30 |
|
Cool find! unfortunately I live in Canada, so importing a car without a title is impossible if I want to get it on the road. The XJS is a cool car, owning one is what ignited my love for the Jag V12 powerplant.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:31 |
|
Way better for Canada!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:33 |
|
I don’t have any need for a Miata when I already have the original Japanese Roadster.
V12 in Fiero = Budget Miura. Or wheely machine.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:34 |

Manual costs more, but is doable.

With 12 velocity stacks sticking through the hood
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:38 |

Gotta be manual. The TH400 in the XJS lets the whole car down, along with the 2.88 rear end gears.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:38 |

Late model crown vic. Just to piss people off
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:39 |
|
But I crave attention
![]() 08/18/2016 at 13:48 |
|
I’ve got a set of 2.88 gears from one in my Ranchero, but (a), I have just as much power in a car that weighs a thousand pounds less, and (b) I have a ~4:1 first gear ratio in the trans. No, really (late ‘70s Borg Warner). I needed a custom bellhousing for that to mate to a Rover V8, a lot like my link.

I’ll just build the seats into the intake/carburetor assembly

|
In that case, mk4 supra
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:06 |

Right? Isn’t that hilarious? It bolts right in with no modification, just buy the crank and the rods and put it in!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:07 |

Now you’re talking!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:10 |

The English conquer the Japanese with 2x as many cylinders. I bet it would even be slower albeit more refined

![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:15 |

Let’s do it. Drive it up to Canada and we’ll do it in a week and drive it to Chicago, hahahaha.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:17 |
|
You mean tow it? There is no engine or trans or anything in it atm....
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:19 |
|
But then I’d have to drive a Miata.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:23 |
|
Ah darn. Tell you what, I’ll put the V12 in my carry on luggage and fly down there.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:25 |
|
That sounds like a much better combo. What year Ranchero?
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:25 |
|
Hell, I could probably fit the healey with all my parts inside it in a large checked bag
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:27 |
|
Whatever I build is gonna be slow anyway, haha.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:27 |
|
We’re running out of reasons to do this.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:29 |
|
You mean not to do this?
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:30 |
|
More importantly, are you going to update your Username? 32 cylinders now?? LOL. My household only has eight. I suddenly feel inadequate.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:32 |
|
‘63, though I’m using taillights from a ‘64ish Cortina, bumpers for a ‘71/’72 Mustang, a custom front pan, headlight surrounds from a ‘62 (modified), and a ‘60 grill.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:33 |
|
I always thought people swapped engines IN PLACE OF the Jag v12, not the other way around.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:34 |
|
That’s true, but I think it’s mostly because people don’t realize how good the V12 engine really is, and the sound is unbeatable.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:35 |
|
Dude! That sounds like a beaut! I love mutts, picking all your favourite parts from every year.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:36 |
|
When the engine is in my possession I’ll change it! I like the sound of that.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:37 |
|
Yes I do mean that, time for another cup of coffee.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:39 |
|
sit on the intake and call it a hot seat
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:41 |
|
I had to add metal to the headlight surrounds, make two trim pieces, and remove the original front valance and latch support to make the ‘60 grill fit, but now that it does, it works pretty well. Of course, I couldn’t have used a ‘63 grill (missing when I got it and expensive) regardless, because that would have interfered with tipping the hood forward with a BMW E30 hood hinge...
Oh, and I had to narrow the front fenders to match up with the bumper at the front, and do some rework of the rear body seam at the back, and the Cortina lights required me to make mounts.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 14:45 |

XJSs are nice cars. They are very rare here though.
The missing title is indeed problematic. I could import a car without a title to Finland but getting it it registered would be nearly impossible.
I do know one case when one guy had purchased a car without a title. It had been imported as spare parts but the guy thought that it was too good to part. He went to register it and the inspection guy just reviewed the papers and did the official paperwork without caring about the missing title. The owner got very lucky.
In here such “official mistakes” cannot be changed even if they would be discovered.

Oy.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 15:00 |

Just got a spool gun to mig weld aluminum within the past month too (ROVERS! and also trim), and this stuff is going to be finished up with body solder, so soon I’ll have the tools for that as well. I’ve got a (shitty) English wheel, a bead roller, a metal brake of sorts, and some other toys...
![]() 08/18/2016 at 15:21 |
|
I have a soft spot for Land Rovers. I’d kill for some proper metal working tools, all I’ve got are hand tools.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 15:27 |
|
The single best metal forming tool is one of these:
Estwing brick hammer, with the ends blunted and rounded just slightly. Heavy enough to shape 16GA, light enough you can tap with it. I’m exaggerating a bit, but for general shaping work, it’s really, really good.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 15:28 |
|
Mmm shiny. All our hammers are borrowed from a couple panel beater friends of my Dad’s, so they’re well used, looks cool though, you can feel the cars that have been beat on in the past through the wood and steel.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 15:30 |
|
I’ll be honest, while I have bodyworking hammers, they’re cheap crappy chinese ones. Proper bodyworking hammers offer more flexibility, but brutalizing heavy sheet, it’s hard to beat a high quality tool that’s balanced properly and is heavy enough - neither of which applies to my set, but does to the Estwing.
![]() 08/18/2016 at 15:43 |
|
Beat it!
![]() 08/18/2016 at 16:07 |

I’d put it back in an XJS, but with an M/T. One of my dream builds right there
![]() 08/18/2016 at 16:17 |

Apparently it totally changes the character of the car. But the kit is about $5k
![]() 08/18/2016 at 17:02 |

you have a Jag V12
drink tea you commoner.

either a dodge a100, or a ford econoline truck.........
![]() 08/18/2016 at 21:49 |

yeah I bet it does. and the thing is... even with the extra 5k I think that’s the cheapest way into an old school manual v12.
![]() 08/19/2016 at 11:05 |

Oh definitely!
